Understanding User Roles

Learn about the three user roles and what each can access in TenantSee

Overview

TenantSee uses a role-based permission system to control what each team member can do within your company. There are three company roles — Owner, Admin, and User — plus a separate Tenant experience.

Company Roles

RoleDescription
OwnerFull access to everything, including removing team members and deleting payments
AdminNearly full access — can manage all properties, tenants, and payments, but cannot remove team members or delete payments
UserRead-only access to buildings, units, tenants, and payments, plus the ability to upload documents

Owner

The Owner role has unrestricted access to all features. Owners can:

  • Create, edit, and delete buildings, units, tenants, and payments
  • Upload and manage documents
  • Invite and remove team members
  • Change team member roles
  • Manage company settings and billing
  • View reports and export data

Admin

Admins can do almost everything an Owner can, with two exceptions:

  • Cannot remove team members from the company
  • Cannot delete payment records

This makes Admin ideal for property managers or trusted team members who need full day-to-day control.

User

The User role is designed for team members who need to view information but shouldn't make changes:

  • Can view buildings, units, tenants, and payments
  • Can upload documents
  • Cannot create, edit, or delete property records

Tenant Experience

Tenants have a completely separate experience from company team members. When a tenant logs in, they see a simplified dashboard with:

  • Home — Overview of their rental information
  • Maintenance — Submit and track maintenance requests
  • Payments — View their payment history
  • Documents — Access shared documents
  • Settings — Manage their account

Tenants can only see data related to their own units and cannot access any company management features.

Switching Contexts

If you belong to multiple companies, you can switch between them using the context switcher in the account menu. Your role may differ between companies — you might be an Owner in one and a User in another.
